My
Post-Bumbershoot Blog, Part I By Erik Schultz

Labor Day weekend in Seattle has only meant one
thing...Bumbershoot. This music, arts, comedy, film,
literary, and eclectic mix of everything festival has been
expanding its list of events every year. In my personal
opinion, it is starting to get a little too busy, but that
just means more specific planning on what you want to check
out. If you were like me, this past weekend was exciting but
exhausting. You ran from one venue to another, stood in long
lines to eat and pee, got bumped into every 15 steps, spent
way too much money on the vast assortment of food and over
priced drinks, and you have already forgotten half of the
folks you have checked out.
Well, this is where we are here to help. Over the course of
the next week, we will post exclusive video interviews with
some of the festival's standouts. Here is a sampling of what
you are in store for...Ian Moore talking about his favorite
places to eat across America, Mariqueen, from West Indian
Girl, giving us a tour of the fashion at Bumbershoot, Forro
in the Dark gives in-site into the Brazilian dance scene,
These Arms Are Snakes talk about Seattle hot spots, Sara
Bynoe discusses teen angst poetry, Beehives gushes over
their first ever Bumbershoot experience. These are just a
few of the individuals you will be learning about. Make sure
you check back daily for new exclusive video interviews from
Bumbershoot.
DEB CALETTI
Deb is one of the nicest and most sincere folks that I met
this weekend at Bumbershoot. Not only is she an
award-winning author but her series of books will be turned
into a movie series thanks to a couple bucks from Microsoft
co-founder and investor Paul Allen and his Vulcan
Productions. That is some good company to keep. Her first
novel back in 2002 was The Queen of Everything. She is on a
book-a-year schedule with her current book The Fortunes of
Indigo Skye being released this past April. 2009 will find
the release of her sixth book, The Secret Life of Prince
Charming. She is also part of two collections of
non-fiction critical essays for Borders Books. One is The
World of the Golden Compass and the other is Through the
Wardrobe: Your Favorite Authors on C.S. Lewis's Chronicles
of Narnia.
IAN MOORE
Ian's bio starts off with an amazing quote from Bob Dylan,
"He who is not busy being born is busy dying." Singer,
songwriter and guitarist Ian Moore lives and creates by that
precept. He has been a staple in the music scene since the
early 1990s. Hailing from Austin, Texas, Ian now resides on
Vashon Island, a small island outside of Seattle. Ian has
shared the stage with some of music's finest including The
Rolling Stones and ZZ Top. Moore also spent time on tour,
sitting in with Bob Dylan. Music is not the only
entertainment experience Ian posses. He appeared as an actor
in Billy Bob Thornton's acclaimed film Sling Blade.
To Be
Loved is Ian's current release on Justice Records. This
record is a little more homegrown as Ian recorded most of
the record at his home studio. "It's been really inspiring
to me because it's like getting behind the Wizard of Oz's
curtain and understanding the process better and the physics
of sound. I really got into it on this record. A lot of this
record to me is exploring the sonic aspects of recording and
how to make these different sounds that I have always
loved."
SARA BYNOE
Sarah's goal is to help people learn to not take themselves
too seriously, and she lives by that same rule. Things really
happened when in 2000 she created a website called Teen
Angst Poetry which, according to her site, is a comedic
database of horrible poems people wrote when they were
teenagers. This website lead to the hosting of a live night
called Teen Angst. Kids have been submitted their "bad"
poetry to Sarah for the last eight years and there is no
sight of slowing down. In 2005 she released an anthology
titled Teen Angst: A Celebration of REALLY BAD Poetry.
With moving to London to get her MA, she plans to start up
Teen Angst nights throughout the UK while still maintaining
the original night in Vancouver, B.C. Currently she is
staring in her one show Fuck Off and Die: Tales in Teen
Angst Poetry. Her site calls Fuck Off and Die, part
stand-up comedy, part poetry reading, and part verbatim
theatre, Fuck Off and Die is a heartfelt yet hilarious
valentine for every lonely, angry and misunderstood teenager
that ever lived because the truth is everyone understands
your pain.
