FACC:
Seattle celebrates Bastille Day
In
its third year, the Bastille Day Celebration moves beyond its
previous role of perpetuating out-dated notions of French culture,
and, at the same time, offers a flirt with the undeniably alluring
sites, sounds and tastes that we have come to love about France.
A day in the lifetime of France, this free festival promises
tokens of today’s French culture and a fun and engaging
history lesson of what Bastille Day is all about, the revolution
that defined a nation and its people. And to celebrate the modern
political and social clout of the French language—spoken
by 264 million people worldwide—this year’s organizers
bring you the multitude of cultures that make up la francophonie,
or the French speaking
community.
In
two themes—the French Revolution and la francophonie—the
celebration offers a little something for everyone, from the
Francophiles, to visual artists, to music fans, to bookworms,
to car lovers, to wannabe Tour de France champions, to the habitual
shopper, and to the child in all of us. Featured activities
include a francophonie expo with active and renowned francophone
organizations and companies, a village with the charming face
of Montmartre, Citroen car and Tour de France/bike exhibition,
cooking demonstration by Seattle’s leading French chefs,
French specialty foods, wine, and retail booths. Children’s
activities include the penalty kick tournament to coincide with
FIFA World Cup 2006, educational art projects, photo opportunities
with look-alikes of famous French figures and musical performances
by storytellers Alafone & Sanvua.
Music and dance by Seattle favorites Bonnie Birch,
Captain Leroy and the Zydeco Locals, Fathia Atallah,
Flordigan Can Can Girls, Kalass, Over the
Water Hurdy-Gurdy Association and Pearl Django!
