A Midsummer Night's Dream
a delight for all ages? At least that's what it says on the
website of the Pacific Northwest Ballet. I wanted to find out
myself and decided to take my daughters to one of PNB's matinees
that are specifically tailored to children. At these matinees,
children can come dressed up and enjoy crafts, drop-in dance
classes and other fantastic surprises. On Saturday, the surprise
was a magician who kept the children entertained prior to the
performance.
Here is what the children had to say ...
A Magical Midsummer Night's Dream

Yesterday,
my mom, my sister and I went to a ballet called
A Midsummer
Night’s Dream. Many
children were dressed up as fairies and princesses. When we
arrived we could make our own wands and tiaras. When my mom
picked up the tickets we saw a magician. He was a really good
magician and he made us laugh. Amazingly, he could make pictures
in a coloring book appear and disappear.
Then it was time to
see the ballet. We sat down. When the conductor came in,
everybody clapped. They started playing and the curtain went up.
The ballet started. I saw the king and the queen of the fairies.
They were fighting over the Indian boy. I personally thought the
king looked a little evil but the fairy queen was very beautiful
and glittery.
My favorite
character was Puck because he was very funny and danced very
well. He had a special flower that could make people fall in
love with each other. Unfortunately, he messed up. He made
characters fell in love with the wrong people. At the end, he
fixed the mess.
All the ballet
dancers danced beautifully. It looked a little painful when the
ballerinas stood on their tippy toes. Still it looked very
gracious and elegant.
The ballet
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was very magical. I found the settings
and the costumes very delightful and fairy-tale like.
At the end of the
ballet, when Puck was bowing to the audience, everybody was
cheering for him most.
I can’t wait to see
the next ballet.
A Funny Midsummer Night's Dream

We went to a ballet
on Saturday. It was a very funny ballet. I will tell you why. My
favorite character was Puck because he was the funniest
character. He had a purple flower that he would wave in front of
other people’s noses and made them fall in love with somebody.
He made some mistakes, though.
The king of the
fairies waved the purple flower of love in front of the fairy
queen’s face while she was sleeping. When she woke up she did
not see the king but the donkey. She fell in love with the
donkey. Everybody was laughing.
At the end of the
ballet, Puck was still my favorite character. He hooked is arms
in a glittery spider web and was pulled up into the air.
The dancing was
beautiful. I loved the parts where the men carried the
ballerinas above their heads.
My second favorite
part was when they stood on their tippy toes.
My third favorite
part was when a male dancer did splits in the air.
When the ballet was
over the crowd was cheering like crazy.
I want to go back
another time.

matinee on Sunday, April 13 at 1 pm
